President Donald Trump says he expects to meet Kim Jong Un later this year, but North Korea rejected the idea of talks while praising the leaders' relationship.

US ally on Putin’s doorstep braces for war as Russia tensions take ominous turn

Russia's embassy in Britain threatened "consequences" over reported British drone use in Ukraine as Moscow escalates rhetoric against NATO allies.

Don’t abolish advise-and-consent

Republican Senators and members of Congress have a job, and it is not to simply hand President-elect Donald Trump the keys. The House and Senate majorities should and will work closely with the 47th president to advance conservative priorities, but they shouldn’t cede their constitutional powers to the executive branch, which has already accumulated way […]

Rivals has as much fun as TV can have

Based on a novel by the British romance writer Jilly Cooper, whose bestselling Rutshire Chronicles were dubbed “bonkbusters” by the British press in the 1980s, Rivals is salacious but smart. Co-produced, somewhat improbably, with Disney+, the Hulu series is an unabashedly pulpy new eight-part comedy-drama about greed and libido among the upper classes of Margaret […]

Democrats choose politics over family

Asked at a town hall in Michigan a week before the election about one thing he would do to heal the political divide in the country, Vice President-elect J.D. Vance said the most important thing all people could do was to pledge not to cut family members out of their lives just because they voted […]

The danger big trucks pose to pedestrians is just another invented panic

Perhaps you didn’t notice, but there is a pedestrian fatality crisis happening right now in the United States. This phrase, “pedestrian fatality crisis,” sprouted up two years ago and has spread, weedlike, everywhere from New York magazine to the New York Review Of Books, with several other major media outlets in between. These outlets have […]

The war that created impressionism

In 1870, Paris, the illustrious heart of Western art, literature, and culture, was reduced to rubble. It was a disaster brought on by France’s ruler, Napoleon III, who started a losing war with Prussia in a vain attempt to improve his country’s standing as a major European power. Sadly, for the fortunes of peaceable Parisian […]

How government is replacing marriage for a core Democratic constituency

During President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign in 2012, a cartoon character named Julia was created to illustrate the life of an average American. Clocking in at just 14 panels, the “Life of Julia” followed a faceless white woman from the ages of 3 to 67. We see her go to preschool, graduate from college, dye […]

The big reason Democrats lost that no one is talking about

Voters soundly rejected the Democratic Party this month, not just in swing states or red states. In the bluest of blue communities, in the nation’s largest and most liberal cities, voters moved noticeably to the right. President-elect Donald Trump did not, of course, win San Francisco, Chicago, or New York City, but he did better […]

The salty pleasures of the doorstopper history of an ocean

Books that occur on the high seas are fairly common. Books about specific seas are rather less so. There are extremely dry books on these damp subjects, on, say, resource management in the Barents Sea. You don’t need to read those. Oceanic histories always at least contain anecdotal deckchair delights. There are tales of Trollope’s […]

Lessons on keeping mum

The wife of a friend of mine is a very talented artist. She’s one of those crafty people who is always making things — pillow cushions, Christmas ornaments, sourdough loaves, you know the type. They’re very annoying, of course, up until the moment they bake a delicious apple pie with a lattice-style crust and serve […]

Kamala’s celebrity campaign giveaway

We all knew the child in school who tried to buy popularity with video games or cool football cards. It turns out that child grew up and became the 2024 Democratic nominee for president. Vice President Kamala Harris had a notable popularity problem when she began her presidential run. In the 2020 cycle, she dropped […]

Heretic and the horror of conformity

If the new horror film Heretic were just about the dark side of religion, it would be smart and entertaining, though not entirely original. After all, the horror genre has dissected this subject on screen for decades. What makes Heretic different is its chilling depiction of what can happen when we disregard our own boundaries […]

A sadness so grand

The most important story of the next 30 years will be the Baby Bust, which began in the United States in 2008. A future historian trying to understand this period, when amid unprecedented wealth and health, we decided to depopulate, would do well to peruse the pages of the New York Times. The outlet has […]

The humanization of Trump: Voters saw something different this time around

Roasts are not usually vehicles for deep introspection, but during his remarks at this year’s Al Smith dinner on Oct. 17, Donald Trump’s lips issued something that sounded suspiciously like an apology. It concerned his own joke that he judged had gone too far, about Democratic opponent Kamala Harris’s child care plan. “The only piece […]

Dear President-elect Trump, stop the handover of a key strategic base to China’s ally

America First faces an immediate challenge. If President-elect Donald Trump plays his cards adroitly, he can prevent the most strategically important U.S. base in the Indo-Pacific region from falling under the shadow of China. The base is on the atoll of Diego Garcia, part of the British Indian Ocean territory. Halfway between Africa and Indonesia, […]
